Port Adelaide will be home to the next major AFL club, after the AFL announced on Tuesday it had extended its partnership with the Sydney Swans to extend the club’s existing contract for five years.
The Swans were due to be officially announced on Wednesday as the new club, but the announcement was delayed until the morning and the club is expected to officially go ahead with the announcement at 10am (AEDT).
Port Adelaide’s current contract with the Swans expires in 2022, but has been extended to 2021 to allow the club to play in Sydney until 2023.
The club had previously been negotiating a new five-year deal with the AFL, but talks fell through in July and it is understood the Swan’s deal will run out after 2020.
It is understood talks are expected to continue and the Swabians will be able to play at the stadium at Adelaide Oval.
In 2016, the AFL said the Swabs would be playing in Sydney as part of the AFL’s plan to grow the game in Australia and the move will also help attract more AFL players to the sport.
The AFL also confirmed it would not be moving the Swubs from its existing home of Sydney.
The Adelaide Football League is the AFL branch of the Adelaide Football Group.
