As Craigslist has begun a massive relaunch of its Charlotte-based services, one of the sites that has been in Charlotte for decades is heading out of town.
Craigslist is pulling out of Charlotte altogether, the Charlotte Business Journal reports, citing the company’s vice president of technology, Craig Hulbert.
The company announced last week that it would be moving all its sites to its new, relaunched Charlotte headquarters, which will be in the same building as the Charlotte Convention Center, which was the site of a 2016 mass shooting that killed nine people.
The news also came just a day after the company announced that it had begun relocating its online business from its existing location in Orlando, Florida, to a new location in Jacksonville, Florida.
“Our business has been resilient over the years and we are committed to staying in the Charlotte area, even as we make a significant investment in Jacksonville,” the company said in a statement.
“In this new location, we will build on the tremendous strength we’ve built over the past five years and grow our workforce in Charlotte.
As we look forward to building on this success, we ask our community to remain with us as we continue to focus on providing our valued customers with the services they deserve.”
Craigslist said it will continue to operate out of its new headquarters in Jacksonville and is working with its partner, Amazon Web Services, to create new jobs for employees in the new space.
The company has also announced plans to hire about 50 additional staff members, including about a dozen tech support employees, and is also looking for new software engineers to help it continue to develop new tools for users to use.
Craigslist’s Charlotte-area workforce is estimated at more than 1,000 people, according to the company.
It currently has more than 10,000 employees in all, and it announced last month that it will hire another 50 new staff members over the next six months.
Craigslist’s Charlotte headquarters will be located in a building that previously housed the company, which had its headquarters in a warehouse at the corner of Charlotte and Interstate 40.
The Charlotte Business Chronicle reports that Amazon’s new Charlotte office will be able to accommodate more than 100 people at a time, and that it has signed a lease to begin moving its software and services to the new location.
Craigslist will continue providing its Charlotte site for several years after it moves to the Jacksonville site.
The move comes after a string of mass shootings at various sites around the country, including a shooting at a Las Vegas nightclub on Oct. 3 that left at least 50 people dead.
The Las Vegas shooting also left 49 people dead, with two of those killed in the hotel room where the gunman used the suite as a base.
A second shooting at an Orlando, Fla., nightclub on Friday left nine people dead and at least 58 others injured.
